The "Oops" Update
I’ve just added undo and redo to MMORPG Tycoon 2!
Even with decades in mainstream video game programming, I had never implemented an undo/redo system before; making one, and then convincing it to interact with our game world and editing tools was a huge learning process and a giant undertaking, but (IMHO) it makes editing in the game world so much less stressful and much more forgiving of mistakes, so it was absolutely worth doing!
We currently store up to 20 levels of undo and redo, so you can undo quite far back if you need to.
In theory we could go even further than that if folks felt strongly about wanting more history for undo? It’s just a balancing act of “amount of history to remember” vs. RAM usage. Let us know using the game’s built-in feedback tools, if you have strong opinions!
Anyway, I’m extremely proud of the new functionality; I actually now find it quite hard to go back and play old builds from before these features were added; undo and redo have just become an essential part of my editing flow!
And this update brings the end of the “Creativity Spike #2” section on our development roadmap! From tomorrow, I’m moving on to “Progression & Technology”
We’ll talk again soon, on that topic!
